Colossians 3:17 — Do All in the Name of the Lord Jesus

Paul writes this line from prison, yet he makes one of the most sweeping claims in his letters. Not just worship, not just the obviously “spiritual” parts of life — “whatever you do, in word or in deed.” Every sentence you speak and every task you touch is folded into a single command. The ordinary Tuesday is not exempt.

The hinge of the verse is the phrase “in the name of the Lord Jesus.” In the first-century world a name carried authority and representation: to act in someone’s name was to act as their authorized agent, the way a steward transacts business on behalf of a master. Paul is not asking you to attach a religious label to your work; he is asking whether the work could honestly be done as Jesus’ representative.

Read in the flow of Colossians, this verse is not a stray ethical rule — it is the practical edge of the letter’s great theme. Paul has spent two chapters insisting that Christ is supreme over all things and that believers have died and been raised with him (Colossians 3:1–4). Verse 17 is what that looks like by Wednesday afternoon: a life so united to Christ that even routine words and deeds are carried out under his name and offered back to the Father in thanks.

Notice how the verse ends — “giving thanks to God the Father through him.” Thanksgiving is the posture that makes the command livable. Work done to prove yourself curdles into anxiety; the same work done in gratitude becomes worship. The two halves belong together: do everything as Christ’s representative, and do it thankfully.

Colossae was a modest town in the Lycus Valley of Asia Minor, and Paul writes to a church he had not personally founded. The letter pushes back against teaching that treated Christ as one spiritual power among many, to be supplemented with rules, rituals, and visionary experiences. Against that backdrop, “do all in the name of the Lord Jesus” is pointed: there is no sphere of life that needs another authority added to Christ. His name is sufficient over all of it.
